On New Years Day 1995 a loud cheer echoed round Birmingham's Winson Green Prison when 800 inmates were told that Fred West had committed suicide, alone in his cell.
Shortly after lunchtime the man accused of killing 12 people in the Gloucester 'House of Horrors' murders tore strips from his bed linen, plaited them, tied his makeshift rope round an air vent above the door and hanged himself.
