A pair of major storms--one tropical, one continental--grabbed most of the headlines in September, but several smaller systems played important supporting roles on the nation's weather stage. The tropical star was Isabel, which battered the southern mid-Atlantic region as a Category 2 hurricane on September 18-19 but could have been a lot worse. The inland player crossed some of the nation's hardesthit drought areas--the Intermountain West, Plains, and upper Midwest--from September 9-11, producing record rains but barely denting impressive, long-term precipitation deficits.
