There is no better testimony to the thoroughly modem mind of the Cro-Magnons than the extravaganza of artwork they left behind. In 1940, four teenage boys ventured into an unexplored cavern in southern France and found themselves in the midst of vibrant images of huge bison, galloping horses, fleeing deer and hundreds of cryptic markings. Painted in a realistic style that does not appear again in European art until the Renaissance, the 17,000-year-old paintings at Lascaux and other nearby caves take a visitor's breath away even today.
