In "The Professional Adrift in the Victorian Novel: (1), Agnes Grey," I argued that Anne Bronte depicts her heroine as a professional who struggles in a society that does not recognize her as such, governessing not having been totally established as a profession. In New Grub Street, the problem is the opposite one. Another novel focussing on work, New Grub Street also presents the world of the professions as a health- and even life-threatening one.
