It is universally and enthusiastically agreed that the Bent Street Public Library was a disgrace to Sydney. It was dark, mean and cramped, with the readers all jammed together around the tables. Yet this was all that could be said against it. The staff wee courteous and efficient, the books multitudinous and with easy reach, while even the native murk of the place was effectively overcome by good lighting.
