A. William Sweeney, a justice on the Ohio Supreme Court for 18 years, died at Jewish Hospital in Kenwood, a son said Monday. He was 83.

Mr. Sweeney, who died Sunday, had been hospitalized since Dec. 4 with respiratory heart failure, his son, Randall Sweeney, said.

A Democrat, Mr. Sweeney was elected in 1976 after unsuccessfully running for secretary of state in 1958 and lieutenant governor in 1970 and 1974.

He was twice re-elected to the court before age forced his retirement in 1994. Under Ohio law, judges cannot seek re-election after turning 70.
