THE PARODY of Sir Denis Thatcher with his golf clubs, a snort of rotgut in one hand and maybe a cigarette in the other, and Margaret looming in the background, won the hearts of the British. It all appeared in the cult satirical magazine Private Eye.
People became devoted to Sir Denis's caricature in the "Dear Bill" letters, which were presented as giving "his unique insider's view of the contemporary political scene".
