IT WAS the Victorians who gave us pantomime as we know it today. Until the 1880s,it was a rather polite affair based on the Italian commedia dell'arte tradition.
In this version there was a harlequin with magical powers who could often transform himself into different characters, a characteristic later leading to the idea of a female playing the principal boy.
When the Victorians incorporated Music Hall into the tradition it took on a very much more robust aspect.
