NEW YORK -- Shares of Whitehall Jewellers rallied over 15 percent as upbeat fourth-quarter sales prospects outweighed third-quarter losses that were magnified by the company's legal woes.

The Chicago-based jewelry specialty retailer lost $7.4 million, or 53 cents a diluted share, for the three-month period ended Oct. 31. In last year's quarter, Whitehall reported a loss of $5.1 million, or 35 cents. Sales for the quarter rose 7 percent to $66.2 million from $61.8 million and same-store sales rose 3.9 percent.
