Wallace Rutherford Dowd Jr., was a unique and special man in many ways and by any measure. He was the 32nd Chief of the Corps and was the only individual ever to serve concurrently as the head of the Supply Corps of two world navies. Wally, as he was known to his many shipmates and friends, died of cancer on 14 July 2003 at his home in Silverdale, Wash., close by his beloved Hood Canal.
