The role of metaphor in "Porphyro in Akron," a three-sectioned work which is Hart Crane's first venture beyond the single brief lyric, has been largely unaccounted. Approached as an essentially realist "set of sketches connected with Akron life now" (Letters 40), the poem virtually glosses itself as proposing the redundancy of the poet in a modern America whose industry "need[s] not the oil of song" (19) and as conceding that in such an environment poetry must remain a private activity, a "bedroom occupation" (61).
