Six months before he died, British soldier-poet Julian Grenfell wrote in a letter: "I adore War. It is like a big picnic without the objectlessness of a picnic. It is all the best fun. I have never been so well or so happy" (Powell 19). In his letters, Grenfell often characterized war in these terms. Likewise, at first glance, "Into Battle," his most read poem (first published on 29 May 1915, three days after he died of wounds sustained in battle near Ypres), suggests Grenfell's poetic voice exulted in all aspects of battle, from preparation to aftermath.
