Abstract--The reproductive activity and recruitment of white mullet (Mugil curema) was determined by observations of gonad development and coastal juvenile abundance from March 1992 to July 1993. Adults were collected from commercial catches at three sites in northeastern Venezuelan waters. Spawning time was determined from the observation of macroscopic gonadal stages. Coastal recruitment was determined from fish samples collected biweekly by seining in La Restinga Lagoon, Margarit...

Journal of the American Statistical Association ; Theo Gasser Burkhardt Seifert The article by Ke and Wang gives us new methods in a field of great applied interest and vigorous statistical research. The introduction of random subject effects into the analysis of samples of curves opens new possibilities of inference. First, we contrast the mixed
Catfish and mullets: the food preferences and taboos of caicaras (Southern Atlantic Forest Coast, Brazil).(REPORTS)
Interciencia ; SUMMARY An important feature of human diets is the establishment of food categories according to its preference or avoidance. The literature on fish food preferences points out a general pattern of preference for fish with scales and an avoidance or prohibition of scaleless fish. The food
Adaptive order selection for spline smoothing.
Journal of Computational & Graphical Statistics ; Computational methods are presented for spline smoothing that make it practical to compute smoothing splines of degrees other than just the standard cubic case. Specifically, an order n algorithm is developed that has conceptual and practical advantages relative to classical methods. From a
Smoothing spline models with correlated random errors.
Journal of the American Statistical Association ; 1. INTRODUCTION Spline smoothing provides a powerful tool for estimating nonparametric functions (Eubank 1988; Green and Silverman 1994; Hastie and Tibshirani 1990; Wahba 1990). Most of the past work is based on the assumption that the random errors are independent. Observations are often
Comparing curves using additive models
Journal of Quality Technology ; Advances in technology have increased dramatically the amount of data measured in industrial processes. Thousands of measurements are often available in operations where previously only a single measurement, at a given point in time or space, was taken. These measurements allow the reconstruction

Statistical modeling as viewed in this book is a passage from unbiased but noisy data to a model with reduced noise but potentially some bias. Models are considered
Comment. (comment on an article by G.M. Laslett in this issue, p. 391)
Journal of the American Statistical Association ; Laslett's empirical comparison of kriging and generalized cross-validation (GCV) spline methods provides insight into the nature of the two estimators. This work provides useful information to the practitioner, who must decide which method is best for his or her situation. The criterion used to
Hybrid adaptive splines.
Journal of the American Statistical Association ; 1. INTRODUCTION Spatially adaptive smoothing, or function estimation, methods that can handle a wide variety of shapes and spatial inhomogeneity have interested statisticians for a long time. Recently, Donoho and Johnstone (1994, 1995, and with Kerkyacharian and Picard [1995]) introduced a group of
A signal extraction approach to modeling hormone time series with pulses and a changing baseline.
Journal of the American Statistical Association ; 1. INTRODUCTION This article considers the problem of modeling a time series consisting of pulses superimposed on a slowly changing component (baseline), which occurs in applications such as time series of hormone concentration levels in blood, voltages in neurons, and underground water levels.
