Dec. 10--Governor McGreevey killed a proposed increase in the state gasoline tax on Tuesday, saying it would harm New Jersey's slowly improving economy.

"There are simply too many families struggling too hard to pay the bills and take care of their loved ones," McGreevey said in a speech to the New Jersey Business & Industry Association in Woodbridge. "I will not increase their burden."
