The years 1940-44 represent a rare sunny interlude in Violette Leduc's autobiographical narrative. In her best-selling La Batarde (1964), Leduc's narrator-protagonist thrives during the Occupation, encountering for the first time financial independence, integration into a community, and emotional fulfilment. In contrast, the Liberation brings about financial ruin and a return to the isolation, emotional deadlocks, and misery that characterize Leduc's pre- and post-war autobiographical writings.
