A quiet revolution is taking place in population geography. GIS is helping build new databases, and they, in turn, are affecting all sorts of geographic applications. They're especially important in estimating populations at risk in natural disasters, technological accidents, terrorist attacks and regional conflicts. Advances have come at two levels: one offering global coverage and the other tackling the world one region at a time.
