After the death recently of Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel _ in 1926 _ we plunged into the Web to find sites about the 21-mile-wide channel.
CHANNEL ASSOCIATION
The official record-keeper of channel swims is the Channel Swimming Association. Rules include: No "artificial aid of any kind"; solo swimmers must be 16 years of age or older; swimmers are allowed to wear goggles plus "one cap and one costume."
