Prices for fluorspar, the raw material for hydrofluoric acid (HF), are up sharply as a result of lower exports from China, rising about 20% so far this year, to $160-$165/m.t., CIF U.S. Gulf and Rotterdam (CW, Aug. 27, p. 36). China is the leading fluorspar supplier, but has been reducing exports as it expands its own HF production. HF makers in the West are suffering a margin squeeze as a result, sources say, as overcapacity in HF makes price increases hard to push through.
