Wisconsin's economic development strategy ought to include a vigorous campaign against federal cuts to a program that helps save and create manufacturing jobs in the state.

At stake is the Wisconsin Manufacturing Extension Partnership, a subsidized consulting service that uses expertise from the state's technical colleges and universities to aid small and mid-size manufacturers. Known as WMEP, the service last year received about $2.5 million in federal money, which it coupled with state funds to help 471 manufacturers improve their technology and business practices.
