Gone is the vintage Cadillac, with its cavernous back seat, good for toting a half-dozen sled dogs. Replacing it is a '91 Dodge Shadow, smaller than the Caddy but cheaper to drive. "A friend gave it to me," Will Steger said. "I can make it from Ely to the Twin Cities on $15."
Minnesota's most famous Arctic adventurer, Steger in a different time might have been a cultural icon, revered for his vision, his tenacity and for the fact that, wherever he travels, he always comes back.
