The sequence of centenary anniversaries of the South African War spawned a plethora of conferences across the world together with their attendant published proceedings (I must declare an interest here, having convened one of the former and edited one of the latter). Such occasions, and their outcomes, can be genuinely useful in refocussing attention on events and periods that have been subject to neglect, or on which there seemed to be little left to say.
