Go almost anywhere in the world and you're likely to find paper currency not only different in denominational sizes, but also in a variety of multicolored designs. Not so in the United States, where, for at least the last three-quarters of a century, all notes have been the same size and basic design, differing only in the portrait, picture on the reverse side, and denominational designation.
