Barbara Kingsolver's 1998 novel, The Poisonwood Bible, is not a literal retelling of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, but Conrad's novella
is present as a kind of pre-text of the novel (literally, since it appears in the novel's bibliography)--and it echoes throughout The Poisonwood Bible in a number of interesting ways.
