Gum chewing dates back through the centuries, and has been practiced in many places. The ancient Greeks chewed mastiche, a resin from the mastic tree. (Hence, the word "masticate.") The resin contained triterpinoid acids and triterpene alcohols. Chewing gum was discovered in recent times in a Swedish bog thought to date back to about 6500 BC.
