The nightshades--what are they? They are the most popular vegetables today, in the Solanaceae family of plants: the tomato, potato, eggplant, and peppers of all kinds except black pepper, which is in another family, Piperaceae. Tobacco also is a nightshade, closely related to the food nightshades, all having glycoalkaloids and addicting drugs.
