It may take an outsider to understand the essential beauty of a place. So it was with the late Carl Hall, an Eastern artist who came west to Oregon and stayed here half a century to paint our trees, beaches and moody atmosphere, attracting national prominence along the way.

A small show of Hall's works opens Tuesday and runs through July at the Karin Clarke Gallery, 760 Willamette St. An opening reception will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday; regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
