Carbon Cylinders for Space Probes

The Metals & Ceramics Div. at DOE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Tenn., makes two important contributions to the U.S. outer planetary space exploration effort. One, which has received considerable regional publicity, is the production of iridium alloy cladding to protect the plutonium-238 isotope fuel. This fuel powers the information-gathering equipment aboard the space probes.
