Abstract

Hardness, porosity, and microstructure of film-forming in polyvinyl acetate/alumina coatings from aqueous suspensions were investigated with a minimum film formation temperature (MFFT) bar, Vickers hardness tester, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The hardness of opaque composite coatings (alumina:latex = 1:2 by volume) increased abruptly at the MFFT of the latex, suggesting that the alumina particles did not change the latex film formation behavior and t...

Dispersing flyash particles in an aluminum matrix: an economical method for dispersing flyash ceramic particles in molten aluminum enables the fabrication of low-cost metal matrix composites.
Advanced Materials & Processes ; Ultalite is a patented, low-cost aluminum metal matrix composite reinforced with ceramic particles derived from flyash. Other metal matrix composites can often be expensive because of the high price of the reinforcement ceramic particles and the high costs associated with dispersing the particles
A new hybrid process for surface modification by combining brush plating with nitrocarburizing
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; In the past, electroplated hard chromium coatings have been very widely used to improve the corrosion and wear resistance of machine parts. Because of the cost and hazard issues associated with the Cr plating process, coatings based on a number of Ni-based alloys (e.g., Ni-W) have been proposed as
PROCESSING : Faster production of thick ceramic coatings
Advanced Ceramics Report ; An improvement to the thermal spraying process for the production of thick ceramic coatings has been jointly developed by two universities in France. The collaboration between the Universities of Orleans and Artois has resulted in a process which is much faster than conventional thermal spraying
The optimum wetting angle for the stabilization of liquid-metal foams by ceramic particles: Experimental simulations
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions ; The stabilization of liquid-metal foams by ceramic particles is studied by experimental simulations. The objective is to determine the optimum wetting property for liquid-foam stability. Ceramic particles are mimicked by inert plastic particles. The liquid metal is mimicked by a continuous,
