IT WAS in Spoleto, a small Umbrian hill town midway between Rome and Florence, that Gian Carlo Menotti celebrated his 80th birthday last week. His gifts from the town included a cake the size of a piazza, a feast of food and music in another square, and a hot-air balloon which, hovering over his house, descended from time to time with presents from his friends. Few composers have been treated so well in their own lifetimes; but Mr Menotti, at least in Italy, is the most popular opera composer since Puccini, and since 1957he and Spoleto have been virtually synonymous.
