Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) by learning about our Caribbean neighbor Puerto Rico. The tropical island is located in the Caribbean Sea (about 1,000 miles from Miami, Florida). Originally claimed for Spain by Christopher Columbus in 1493, it became part of the United States in 1898. Puerto Rico, however, is not a state--it has been a commonwealth since 1952. This means that the islanders are U.S. citizens, but they don't pay federal taxes and cannot vote for President.
