THE fate of four heavily polluted American ships heading for Britain sank into legal farce yesterday.

A High Court judge put a temporary block on the so-called ghost ships being dismantled in a Hartlepool shipyard.

But nothing can stop the rusting hulks ending up in British waters.

Last night the first two were approaching the Channel.

The decommissioned U.S. Navy ships are believed to contain asbestos, chromium- treated ballast water, fuel oil, CFCs and leaded paint.
