Less than an hour after three bombs ripped apart the centre of the southern Balinese town of Kuta, as fires raged, buildings collapsed and street signs melted, a Balinese man turned to me and cried, "We're all dead now."
His words have echoed around the island in the year since the bombings of 12 October 2002. He was talking about tourism--the lifeblood of Bali, its economic artery--which he predicted would shut down almost overnight.
