When I entered the African Art History program at Indiana University in 1986, I was already aware at the legends and stories surrounding Roy Sieber: the birthday cake that landed on the floor, the evenings at his home that were spent looking at objects, and his one-liner "The time to read a book is when you are reading the book!"
