Last April Avid announced Avid DNA, its next-generation hardware family. DNA stands for digital nonlinear accelerator, and it's a significant departure from previous Avid hardware solutions. DNA replaces what used to comprise a hardware-based Avid system: a set of PCI cards and a breakout box (BOB). DNA is a single I/O box and video processor that connects to a PC or Mac via a FireWire 400 cable (see Figure 1).
