Following brain injury, patients may experience depression, denial, and other emotional changes. Rehabilitation, including behavior modification, is indicated to improve the psychological outcome over the long term; depression and anxiety in family members need to be addressed as well. For the injured, there may be impairment of the ability to function in relationships, self-awareness, self-regulation, ability to express thoughts and feelings, and excitation and inhibition.
