QUESTION Why is the Victorian poet always known as Alfred Lord Tennyson, rather than Lord Alfred or Lord Tennyson?
ALFRED TENNYSON was created a peer as Baron Tennyson (1st Baron Tennyson of Aldworth), by which name he would have been referred to during his lifetime; or, less formally, Lord Tennyson.
After his death, he would historically have been known as Alfred, Lord Tennyson. This was to distinguish him from his son Hallam, Lord Tennyson, who was Governor-General of Australia, and Hallam's son Lionel, Lord Tennyson, who captained England at cricket.
