Nov. 1--MARSTONS MILLS, Mass.--Early Thursday morning, workers for Robert Maffei Landscape Contractors gathered in the company garage for their weekly meeting.

After dispensing with the usual announcements, company founder Robert Maffei asked, "What's the word of the month?"
