Rescue and clean-up crews faced dangerous conditions at the huge debris pile at New York's Ground Zero after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. That's why maps were created showing hot spots where fires still smoldered and the locations of crane booms and hanging debris. The maps were made using aerial photographs and geographic information systems.
