Three years ago, during his term as president of the St. Petersburg Bar Association, commercial litigator Eric Ludin couldn't help notice that the organization was overwhelmingly white.

Only five of 970 members were African-American. "That was something I thought was kind of startling," Ludin recalled recently. "So I decided that one of the themes of my presidency would be to try to improve that."
