Gazing at the face of a bearded old Dutch man, Rembrandt could imagine how the biblical patriarch Joseph might have looked. If he visualized Adam and Eve, he pictured two very real characters, earthy and a little awkward as they handled the fateful apple.
All around him, he noticed the nuances that gave life to his world. A sleeping puppy, a graceful shell, a wintry pond, a seated female nude all have roots in the everyday pageant of existence he witnessed in 17th century Holland.
