At a time when many investors have about as much appetite for savings and loans as vegetarians have for filet mignon, local investor Richard Osborne is buying large stakes in the institutions.

Mr. Osborne last month paid more than $1 million for an 8.1% share of the parent company of First American Savings Bank in Canton and is considering an investment d in Park View Federal Savings & Loan Association, which is trying to raise $10 million in capital, say sources familiar with his potential deal with Park View.
