Kentucky's early economy was dominated by agriculture. The advent of the steamboat and the state's extensive river system made Kentucky an agricultural center in the early 1800s.
But the state didn't invest much in infrastructure, such as canals and railroads. While its neighbors to the north industrialized, Kentucky remained largely agricultural.
