Under the terms of Directive 94/62/EEC on packaging and packaging waste, manufacturers and retailers are required to take back and recycle, free of charge, used sales packaging from consumers. In Austria, like in many other countries, manufacturers and retailers responded by signing up to a comprehensive collection system, known as the Green Dot scheme, which takes on the responsibility of collecting, sorting and recycling the packaging waste.
