An Islamic appeals court in Katsina, Nigeria, recently overturned the conviction of a Nigerian mother sentenced to death by stoning for committing adultery in a case that has drawn international attention.

Amina Lawal, 32, smiled as she held her baby girl, Wasila, when the ruling was read to a packed courtroom of journalists and human rights lawyers and activists who spearheaded her appeal. Police and lawyers hustled her away afterward.
