I was pleased to read The Nation's May 13 editorial on RU 486 by Lawrence Lader, "Breaking the Ban." As Lader reported, the twin gatekeepers of RU 486, the French manufacturer and the U.S. government, have kept the drug from even being tested in this country because of threats from the anti-choice lobby. The resulting vacuum is being filled by a new mayoral-Congressional coalition. Its goal is to change the "debate and climate" around abortion that Roussel-Uclaf, the manufacturer, cites as a reason for not exporting the drug for testing in the United States.
