REPORTS emerged last night that the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams is set to re-ignite the fierce row about the appointment of an openly gay man as a bishop in the United States.

Arguing that it defies the Anglican church's established position, Dr Williams is expected to tell a meeting in London that the consecration of Canon Gene Robinson as Bishop of New Hampshire is in breach of the church's position on homosexuality.
