Oct. 14--About 5,200 Cumberland County residents failed to take advantage of a tax credit in 2001 that is intended to help mostly lower-income families, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

As a result, each taxpayer lost an average of nearly $1,800.

The taxpayers failed to apply for the earned income tax credit, said Valerie Thornton, an IRS spokeswoman. ...
