The investment trust sector has had a rough ride in recent years, but while some problems can be pinned on tumbling stock markets, others have been firmly of its own making.

Market falls hammered all equity-linked investments, but it took a special genius to come up with the split-capital investment trust fiasco, which cost investors billions and sparked yet another mis-selling scandal.

Confidence is now creeping back into the stock market and investment trusts are showing fresh signs of life, so do they deserve a fresh look?
