Practitioners take on hernia repairs to cut waiting times: specialist nurses to take on minor surgery and diagnostics under waiting time initiative.(news)

HERNIA SURGERY is to be performed by nurses for the first time in the UK in one of a series of pilot projects designed to reduce surgical waiting lists.

Nurses will also carry out minor surgery and diagnostic tests for bowel cancer as part of the 1.5 [pounds sterling] million Action on General Surgery Initiative, which has given 16 hospital trusts 90,000 [pounds sterling] each to fund pilot programmes.

Plymouth Hospitals NHS trust will use the money to train nurses to perform groin hernia repairs.
