THE SUBTLE YET POWERFUL dynamics of social class permeate everything we are and do. Yet while class is powerfully determinative, it is often misunderstood and typically overlooked in U.S. society and in our church communities. This is because the perception that U.S. society is classless is core to our cultural mythology. Unless exposed and challenged, classism will continue to frustrate the church's attempts to confess the gospel, to witness, and to evangelize--and schemes of church growth will fail because they themselves are too often captive to these same class dynamics.
